How we built this

No single source can describe the UK broadband market accurately. We combine four.

April 2026 snapshot reflects the completion of our Companies House resolution track and duplicate consolidation track. Every active provider now has a Companies House identification, except one confirmed sole trader.

Companies House API

Legal names, numbers and corporate trees from the official register.

Web-health monitoring

Automated checks on DNS, TLS and HTTP for every URL we list.

Heuristic geocoding

Postcodes mapped to UK ITL1 regions for consistent geography.

Human sample review

Every flagged row, ambiguous ownership chain and edge case is reviewed by a person.

Monthly snapshot discipline

Every snapshot is dated, versioned and compared to the last so drift is visible.

Confidence rating

89/100
Average across 429 active providers

We score every provider on four axes and average across the active index. Higher scores mean we know more, and know it more reliably.

352 High 82.1%
76 Medium 17.7%
1 Basic 0.2%
0 Low 0%

High tier

How we score this band today (rules evolve slightly as the dataset grows):

  • Companies House number, legal name and ultimate parent chain all reconcile.
  • Website responds OK or a documented bot-block; no dead DNS.
  • Region and category are classified; key contact fields are present.

This is a data-quality signal for our directory, not a measure of how good a provider is for customers.

Medium tier

How we score this band today (rules evolve slightly as the dataset grows):

  • Most identity fields match Companies House; one or two gaps remain.
  • Website health is known; occasional SSL or redirect quirks.
  • Ownership or social links may still be incomplete.

This is a data-quality signal for our directory, not a measure of how good a provider is for customers.

Basic tier

How we score this band today (rules evolve slightly as the dataset grows):

  • Trading identity is plausible but filings or URLs are thin.
  • May lack ultimate parent or full contact detail.
  • We still list the provider but treat claims cautiously.

This is a data-quality signal for our directory, not a measure of how good a provider is for customers.

Low tier

How we score this band today (rules evolve slightly as the dataset grows):

  • Limited verification: missing CH match, broken site, or conflicting names.
  • Kept in the index for transparency while we chase better sources.
  • Scores here are a prompt for manual review, not a verdict on service quality.

This is a data-quality signal for our directory, not a measure of how good a provider is for customers.

Our quarterly target: we commit to raising the index-wide average by at least 1 point per quarter. Next target: 90 by 30 September 2026.

Field completeness

What we know, field by field. This is our self-criticism: the gaps are where we have more work to do.

Website health

Some big providers actively block automated HTTP probes. "Bot-blocked" does not mean the website is broken; it means they have told our crawler to go away politely.

341 OK
38 Bot-blocked (likely live)
20 Dead link
30 Other error

Monthly snapshot commitment

A fresh snapshot every month, always. Each one is versioned and preserved so researchers and journalists can cite a stable point-in-time record. We hold ourselves to a minimum one-point confidence improvement per quarter, and we would rather miss a headline number than fudge one.

Dataset access for researchers and journalists

The full row-level CSV is not published as a bulk download. If you need it for legitimate research, policy work or reporting, email [email protected] with a short description of your project and how you will use the data. General site enquiries can still go to [email protected].
